The irony is not lost on me that my place of inspiration, this lonely island, characterized in other times by its inherent ability to isolate me from society, is this year merely one more place where a person is holed up, wondering how everyone else is doing. Reports reach me, as I am sure they do you, of people working – finally, wonderfully, inspiringly – together toward common goals. Even if it is, ironically, in finding ways to be apart.
Oh, and when I think how many times I have reflected on us, "humanity" that is... on our refreshingly absurd variety of dress and culture and values. And how many times I have despaired at our striving against each other, and on the seeming impossibility of our ever seeing the truth: the precise commonality that we share with one another, and which connects us. And why is this not always our first thought about ourselves: that we share this place, that we share a future, that our care for family and friends and finances and fun are all so very similar no matter what our heritage or place or color or class.
So now there is something that inescapably affects us all - as if living on this one tiny life-filled orb in a galaxy of inhospitable orbs wasn’t enough. So now we are reminded in every day, in the most intrinsic way, that we are all connected; that what we do affects the whole. But that we can also – and should now and significantly – work together. That we can continue to do so into the future; that maybe, along the way, we create a better world.
I wrote this song. Please enjoy the sound-samples I included from our isolated selves made on balconies, and out of windows, and six feet apart around the world.
